Community Involvement - Giving Back
Miss Bruno continuously encourages her students to become actively involved in their communities. She has provided many opportunities for this within her classroom and school-wide as well. In the past several years, Miss Bruno's dance classes have participated in many projects and activities that have brought the community of Barrie into our classroom, as well as her classes out into the community. Her Dance classes have also participated in many flash mobs and dance pieces that bring awareness about many issues that are relevant to the students here at Bear Creek. Below are a few of the projects that Miss Bruno's Dance classes have had the opportunity to be apart of.

Barrie Ribbons of Hope
In the Spring of 2012, the Kodiak Dance Team had the privilege of working with members of the Barrie Ribbons of Hope Dragon Boat team. This team consists of breast cancer survivors who, through the Dragon boat races and the CIBC Run for the Cure, raise public awareness for breast cancer and show that there is life after breast cancer. This team has been together for 10 years, actively participating in events around the Simcoe area.
The team approached us in the Fall of 2011 in hopes that our Dance Team would work with them on a small project. We welcomed them into our home and the students and ladies had a blast! The students taught the ladies a routine that everyone will remember for a very long time. our students also learned so much about the strength and resilience these cancer survivors brought into our environment. the Kodaks love to participate in events in our community. It is truly important to give back, and these students are shining examples of compassion, empathy, and responsibility.
The Barrie Women's Shelter
This past Christmas, the Grade 9 Dance class helped seven-year-old Alexandra Pino collect teddy bears and essential products to be donated to the Barrie Women's Shelter. For the past 3 years Alex has been volunteering to help many organizations throughout Barrie, including RVH. In November, Alex was nominated for the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. She was among 150 nominees this year. Only 12 youth from around the province were selected to receive this award. We are proud to have contributed to Alex's volunteer work. We are so proud to announce that Alex has been selected as one of the 12 youth to receive this award! Congratulations Alex! We can't wait to contribute to your work again in the near future!
